Canadian Wildfire Smoke Triggers Air Quality Advisory in New York and New Jersey
US · Published Jul 16, 2026
Smoke from over 100 wildfires burning in Canada has drifted into New York State, including New York City, and parts of New Jersey, prompting an Air Quality Health Advisory.
The New York State Departments of Environmental Conservation and Health have issued the advisory due to elevated levels of particulate matter in the air.

Impact & Risks

The smoke and poor air quality are particularly hazardous for individuals with pre-existing heart and lung conditions, children, older adults, and pregnant women. Symptoms such as shortness of breath, coughing, and dizziness may occur, and chronic health issues could be aggravated. Residents in affected areas are advised to limit outdoor activities and take precautions to protect their health.
